While I don't normally read science fiction, "Blazing the Sun" to appealed to me because it has enough mystery, romance and adventure besides the science fiction element to hold my attention. I feel it would be a good read for those who enjoy other genres. I very much enjoyed the characters and how they developed throughout the story. The interplay between the antagonists (the government and mobsters) and protagonist (Samson) was very stimulating and kept my attention throughout the story. The interwoven social issues created a unique platform for discussion among others who were reading it at the same time as I was. I very much enjoyed the book and would recommend it.Product details

If you like good science fiction reads then you will like this book...however if you like endings all wrapped up and pretty like I do...then you might not like this one. I was left wanting more with a sequel unwritten. Now I gotta wait who knows how long to find out what happened! Man that is irritating, 4 stars because of the ending.
Blazing the Sun is a smart future-based novel about talented space ship racer Samson Ford. It's exciting, scary, sexy, and thought-provoking. It's full of story-lines, characters and themes I find fascinating, even though I don't usually read science fiction. Themes like the struggle to win, romance, betrayal of friendship, greed, power, and terraforming of the solar system. The most intriguing theme to me is eugenics, and whether natural born humans should be equal to DNA-enhanced "designer" humans, or if naturals should be banished from society. Samson Ford is natural born, famous for winning races, and the novel is a page-turner as he unwittingly finds himself at the center of this life-changing debate. I have thoroughly enjoyed this engrossing novel, and the big themes it has provoked me to think about.
Blazing the Sun is a great read for anyone interested in the big questions in Ethics or someone just interested in just some old fashion science fiction escapism. Samson, the main protagonist, could not be a better written character for helping the reader thought experiment with what 20th Century eugenics philosophy might mean for humanity in the future. Scary! If you have seen designer clothing runway fashion shows in person or t.v., you will start to have an understanding for some of the visuals you will run into in this book; Only, it's not the clothes that are out there, it's the designer humans. If you like the following books or movies, you will enjoy Blazing the Sun The Sun Also Rises, Ender's Game, 1984, Brave New World, Hunger Games, Firefly, Apocalypto, etc. Other key elements racing, chase scenes, religion, spirituality, cults, mafia, sex, violence, secrecy, flawed human beings, power, ambition, space travel, astrophysics, one world order intrigue at a solar system level, and the list goes on. Best science fiction book I have read in years! I'm looking forward to book number two.
Great action, mixed with the intrigue and the interesting "old religous" group
along with kicking around the ideas of Privilege, genetic enhancement, and all that. Very intriguing altogether
Of course, I will have to strangle you a little bit for the ending... I'll leave it at that for no spoiler.
I would give you 5/5 for action/intensity, 2/5 for romance (the banter and tension needed some work), 4/5 for plot curve - good set up of characters, just had to subtract one for the ending, and 5/5 for interesting subjects and commentary on modern society

I've been attempting to read this for a book club I'm involved in, but so far I'm beyond unimpressed. The prose is clumsy and clunky and lacks any sort of finesse whatsoever. I find myself constantly distracted by passing thoughts of how a statement could have been better written (and would have been better written in the hands of a more masterful author), especially with respect to anything that's actually supposed to be remotely descriptive. This is an example of unskilled, middle-school writing at its most grating. I have read fan-fiction that is more impressive.
The story itself is almost interesting, which just makes it that much worse. I want to like it, I do. But not only does the prose distract and detract from the story it attempts to convey, the random nuggets of completely irrelevant information presented to give the reader an idea of how alien this era's culture is from present-day culture is ludicrous. I'm sorry, but breast milk will never be mass-produced for human consumption no matter how many genetically engineered, hyper-lactating women there are in the world. Ugh. Just save your money.
Addendum I actually came back to edit this review to decrease my original rating from two stars to one. If I were able to give this negative stars, I would. I finally gave up on this book around the 51% mark (according to my ). In addition to what I mention above, it becomes glaringly obvious that not only has a competent editor never even bothered to glance at this book, but that the author is also something of a control freak. Lambright wants to make sure beyond a shadow of a doubt that the reader experiences EXACTLY what it is he sees in his head, going so far as to provide descriptions of even the most minor characters and settings regardless of how inconsequential their role or how brief their appearance on the page. He attempts to control the reader's experience as much as possible, leaving NOTHING to the imagination. It is also quite obvious that he either gives entirely too much credit to his own talent and story or entirely too little credit to his readers...Lambright repeatedly bashes the reader over the head with what he obviously considers to be "important" plot points, reiterating minutiae every chance he gets. This story is not nearly complex enough to require ANY details (no matter how major or minor the author believes they are) to be repeated more than once or twice AT MOST. I have a very strong suspicion that this work is self-published; I can't imagine that any legitimate publishing house would have ever produced a work of this caliber (and considering some of the trash that makes it to print these days, that's saying something).
